عن الدورة

This course provides an in-depth exploration of consciousness and its various states, from wakefulness to altered mental experiences. Beginning with fundamental questions about the problems and types of consciousness, the course examines levels of awareness and the characteristics that define conscious thought. Students will explore how much control we really have over our minds and gain a scientific understanding of circadian rhythms and their impact on daily functioning. The module also covers the stages of sleep, the consequences of sleep deprivation, and common sleep disorders, while exploring the controversial topic of polyphasic sleep. Dreaming is analyzed through classic and modern theories, including Freud’s psychoanalytic view, activation-synthesis, and information processing approaches. The course further investigates how psychoactive drugs affect neural communication, how drugs are classified, and the psychological mechanisms behind hypnosis and meditation. Practical review questions help reinforce understanding of consciousness, sleep, and altered states. By the end of this course, students will have a well-rounded knowledge of the mind’s processes, the science of sleep, and how various interventions and behaviors can influence cognition and mental well-being.
