An introductory mechanics of materials course covering stress, strain, deformation, and the behavior of materials under applied forces.
عن الدورة

This introductory course in mechanics of materials provides a foundational understanding of how solid materials respond to forces and loads in engineering applications. The course, presented through Saylor Academy and featuring instruction from Ken Manning, is designed for engineering students and beginners studying mechanical and structural analysis.

The course introduces core concepts such as stress, strain, deformation, and material behavior under external loading. Learners will understand how forces acting on solid bodies produce internal reactions and how engineers analyze these effects to ensure structural safety and performance.

A major focus is placed on axial loading and how materials stretch, compress, or deform under tension and compression forces. The course also introduces elasticity and the relationship between stress and strain, which forms the basis of material mechanics.

Learners will explore essential engineering concepts including Poisson’s ratio, torsion, beam behavior, and structural response. The course helps build analytical thinking and problem-solving skills used in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and structural design.

By the end of the course, learners will have a strong understanding of mechanics of materials fundamentals and be prepared for more advanced topics in solid mechanics and engineering analysis.
